Coach's Corner - May 2008

The temperature has been unseasonably warm allowing all of our spring teams to take advantage of the beautiful weather and get outdoors for practices. The MacDuffie home field is looking greener and healthier than it has in years. This spring, almost 90 student-athletes are participating on 6 team sports – Baseball, Softball, Lacrosse, Girls’ and Boys’ Varsity Tennis, and JV Coed Tennis. Please continue to check out the sports schedules on the MacDuffie website for dates of upcoming home games and come out and support MacDuffie. GO MUSTANGS!

Baseball
Coaches Mullan and Faytell and Assistant Coach Faas have all been impressed with the improvement over the past few weeks. James Moriarty (’08) is sharing the pitching responsibilities with Eric Gonzalez (’10), and both are pitching quite well. Santi Odierna (‘08) has been solid defensively behind the plate and Ben Gardner (’08) has been knocking in some key runs for the Mustangs.

Softball
The team was off to a great 2-1 start and then suffered a few close losses later in the season. Coach Vosburgh is getting the girls back on track and has nothing but compliments for Jess Yopak (‘08) who has demonstrated her expertise behind the plate as catcher. Also playing well for MacDuffie have been Seniors Sam Assarian, Tati Rossello-Cornier, and Kate McKenna. Ali Green ('09), Alex Tilley (‘09) and Jo Whalen (’11) are also showing great talent at their positions.

Lacrosse
The Lacrosse team has suffered this year after losing 7 key players to graduation. They are a young, small team, but full of heart and determination. Led by co-captains Dani Petraitis (‘10) and Simone Lawrence (’11), the team is improving from one game to the next and they continue to score goals offensively. Monica Rosskothen (’09) and Meghan Cote (’08) are both contributing to the team’s success, while Alex Curbelo (’11) has been a standout in goal.

Tennis
On the boys’ side, Ethan Beldengreen-Karas (’10) and Colin Turkel (’09) have been strong, both in their doubles matches and singles matches. The girls are benefiting from the talent of returning seniors Chelsea Magoon and Taylor Stevens. Seventh grader Shavari Johari has also been strong this season.
