Science Fair Focuses On The Environment

How do antacids affect liquids? Can plants grow in naturally acidic soil? How does fertilizer affect the growth of a plant? All these questions and more were answered during the May 5th Science Expo when students in the sixth and seventh grade proudly showcased their research projects that tied into the Middle School’s yearly theme of the environment.

Shavari, a seventh grader from Longmeadow, studied the environmental implications of acid rain in her experiment. Using vinegar to simulate acid rain, she watered three different plants (chives, cilantro, and fenugreek) with different percentages of vinegar for over two months. Shavari faithfully measured and charted the results every Sunday and proved that the acidity of the vinegar (acid rain) slowed the growth of the plants and weakened their root systems.

“We were pleasantly surprised at the depth of exploration and investigation presented at the Expo. The kids had a fun time as they learned about the process of science,” reported Middle School Head and Science teacher Mr. Greg Vennell.
